After spending a year studying my Master’s in writing and publishing, I curated a list of some of my favorite places. Skewed toward the book-worthy and whimsy-inspired, this travel guide is mostly just a retelling of my favorite memories in London.
London, England
Transportation
Airport
The Tube
Car Service
Try to fly into Heathrow, which is closest and more accessible to the city. You can take the Heathrow Express into the city but the Tube is about thirty minutes longer but a lot cheaper.
Get yourself an Oyster card and use the tube or buses to get around if you don’t feel like walking. Plus, a London Underground ticket makes for a great souvenir!
The recognizable Black Taxis are obviously a bit on the expensive side but they’re a great option for travel. You can book one through the Freeway app. There’s also a boat taxi on the Thames offered from Uber.
Attractions
The British Museum
Free entry but advanced booking is advised. The tessellated ceiling in the Great Court was one of the more fascinating architectural features of the museum, to me. Arguably one of the most interesting artifacts featured in the museum would be the Rosetta Stone. You can also catch a glimpse of Egyptian coffins, Parthenon sculptures, and an Easter Island statue.
Buckingham Palace
While, sadly, Buckingham Palace is no longer the home to the royal corgis, it’s still a beautiful location to visit. Located near the lovely Hyde Park, spending an afternoon strolling the historic park and visiting the always bustling palace is a relaxed way to spend exploring London.
Local Markets
Borough Market
Located in the heart of London, Borough Market is a bustling food market that serves up a variety of London’s finest foods. This is a great stop for a simple lunch or make it an entire meal by sampling various vendors’ offerings. Open six days out of the week, this quintessential stop will never disappoint.
Old Spitalfields Market
With a range of stalls, Old Spitalfields Market features some life-long vendors as well as emerging artists. With food stalls, antiques, vinyl, and pop-up shops, there’s always something new to discover when exploring the market.
